Napoleon III was born in Paris on 20 April Named Charles Louis Napoleon, he was the third son of Louis Bonaparte (the third brother of Napoleon) and of Hortense de Beauharnais (daughter of Empress Josephine by her first marriage).

His parents&#; arranged marriage was not very happy, and his father Louis, king of Holland from to , lived mostly separately from his wife and their sons Napoleon-Charles (born in , died in ) Napoleon-Louis (born in , died in ) and Charles Louis Napoleon (who was known simply as Louis-Napoleon).

After the fall of the First Empire in , the Bonapartes were obliged to leave France.
